TRIAL GAME.

The first trial game of representatives from the Kaipara Rugby Union to contest a match with the Otamatea Rugby team was played on the Show Grounds last Saturday. The ground was not in the best of condition, but playery took the " watery grave" in good part. A slippery ground and a greasy ball spoilt what might have been a most interesting contest' between the two teams. Sides were captained by TeTuhi and Becroft. Only 20 players rolled up out of 35 picked to play. Glorit did not send any representatives, but their neighbours, Kaukapakapa, sent five representatives, all of whom played up to Rugby standard and will certainly have a few players to wear the " Rep. Cap." As it was, Te Tuhi's team played the better wet weather game, -and although on the defensive for the best part of the game they well earned their win by playing a good solid defensive game. The backs and forwards were both fast, and they were easily able to cope with the passing of their opponent's backs, which was not the game to rely on under such weather conditions Te Tuhi's team showed the better judgment all round, and when the opportunities came their way they swooped Becroft's team up, the tries by Colvin, Pengelly and K. Drinnin being obtained by good openings made by the backs. Te Tuhi was a tower of strength to his side and played the most "heady" game on the ground. Becroft scored the only try for the losers. For the winners To Tuhi and Agrassiz were the pick of the backs and wero well supported by Colvin, Drinnin, Bradly, "Copper" Drinnin and Pengelly (wing) of the forwards. For the losers Becroft stood out on his own and was willingly supported by Sykes and the Davis Bros, in the back division, and Montgomery and Blackwell were the most conspicious of a hard working forward pack.

Mr W. Mouatt carried out the duties or referee to the satisfaction of both sides.
