Hitherto the practice lias I been to accept nominations before and on the evening of the householders' meetings. i Madam Lina Cavalieri, one of the reigning queens of the operatic stage and widely known as "the most beautiful woman in Europe," is the much-envied possessor of an array of jewels, the equal lof which few women possess. It is' said i that these jewels approximate £200,000 in value. They consist of pearls, diamonds, j rubies, and other precious stones in vast I array. Most of these gems will be worn | by Madame Cavalieri in her portrayal of J the Duchess Gismonda in "Love's Con- ■ quest, " a Paramount l'icture, to be scree'ed at Everybody's on Saturday evening I next. i In these days of fast motive power, the I ordinary push bike is quickly giving way |to the motors and very few of the old j timers are to be seen. One local young ! man is still more energetic than most j and on Saturday last " push-biked " to I Auckland, returning on Sunday. Some of his boardinghouse acquaintances were | very surprised to see him depart on such a venturesome journey, but were more surprised when he returned safely. So enthusiastic was "Scotty" over the trip that he hus persuaded several of his aforesaid friends to accompany him on a trip to Auckland this coming week end, to see. the Prince. The trip will bo made on " push-bikes, " and the venturesome ones are now practisieg for the journey. We have been accused of not giving much publicity to the fact that the the steamer conveying regatta excursionists from Shelley Beach on Easter Monday stuck in the mud when nearing Mt. Rex wharf. There was really not much to be said—practically all the possible remarks available were made by the steamer's passengers on that unfortunate occasion. The few philosophically inclined persons aboard who were at the previous regatia, when it was the people themselves who were stuck in the mud, remembered the occasion, and remained silent regarding the latest incident, A number who, when at last released, walked from Mt, Rex to Helensville, have no doubt now as to the rough road between the two places,

The extraordinary excuses that a wife will sometimes make in order to protect a brutal husband are illustrated by an incident that occurred at the London courts. A man was charged with beat-

ing his wife and biting off- a portion of her ear. "Your husband has been treating ■ ' you very badly, eh?" asked the magistrate. "Oh, no, your worship," replied the wit- (. ness. "No ? Did he not bite off a piece of your ear' ? "No, your worship, I did it myself!"

In reply to a correspondent the Journal of Agriculture says that pinua insignus is quite suitable for building houses, though it does not take paint well and requires special treatment. The wood will last a long time. A building of the materal has been erected at Franktoh. Most persons when they enter a railway carriage and deposit a parcel or coat on a seat and then leave for a few minutes imagine that that particular •pace is theirs for the journey. The railway authorities, however, do not recognise any reservation of seats unless done by means of ticket in the usual way, and if complaint is made that a seat has been "jumped " they are hardly likelyto interfere. Nevertheless it is generally regarded as an ungentlemanly act for one' person to commandeer another's Beat during his temporary absence.

The social in the Agricultural Hall last evening by the Church of England Ladies' (Tuild was attended by a verylarge number of people, and a most enjoyable time was spent by all. Houchen presenting th^se with appropriate happy remarks. The dancing patrons had an excellent floor and tip-top music, and Bupper (provided by the ladies) was firstrate.
