MAIL STEAMERS

SOME SEVERE COMEENTS

At the last meeting of the Dar- ] gaville Borough Council letters . were read from the Auckland and Dargaville postmasters stat- ■ ing that in regard to the proposal , to run steamers on Friday nights instead of ; Saturday mornings between Helensvilie and Dargaville, it haxl been deoided by the head office that in view of the largely signed petition against the proposal the matter is to stand over. It was proposed to receive the letter. . His worship said the Council should not receive it only. He wa.«. sure that before long an indignation meeting would be held, and something more would be heard of the matter. They had previously held meetings of local bodies and the proposal had been carried unanimously to support a large boat to leave Helensville on Friday night, arriving in Dargaville early Saturday morning. It was time that they had larger boats —the Tuirangi was far too | small. He knew of two families who had arrived here hut went back disgusted, It was stated one of the children was taken ill through the insanitary and overcrowded state of the boat, It was pointed out by some of the Councillors that the " Tui " wag far too small, too dirty, and the sanitation bad. Cr. Paul said they could not do anything in the matter until Mr. Niccol had arrived, and he was sure there would be a big crowd present at the meeting. It v/as decided to hold over the matter until Mr Nicol arrived. I The Hobson County Council received a similar letter from the local postmaster, and it was mere- . ly received.
