LABOUR'S CANDIDATE

Great amusement was caused in Kaukapakapa last week at the meeting of the official Labour candidate, Mr A. Gregory. No proper arrangements had been made for the meeting, it apparently being the result of a sudden inspiration brain wave that occurred during the afternoon. About 25 people, however, rolled up to see the fun, and to hear what the would-be politician had to say. In his usual business like way, Mr Gregory had failed to provide a chairman for his meeting, and some difficulty was experienced in persuading anyone to fill the unenviable position. At the last moment Mr Pace consented to act, making it plain that by doing so he was not allying himself with the candidate or his views. As the meeting proceeded it became apparent that the candidate was not a fluent speaker, and before the end of his address many were fidgeting. The address itself was very much on the lines of the one given at Helensville proviously, frequent references being made to " Put it there on polling day." As the table which was indicated as the place to put it in, may not be there on 17th December, the candidate's advice may be difficult to follow (if one even wanted to). Mr Gregory at the close of his address answered a few questions in a very unsatisfactory way, the large number of those present apparently feeling it was useless to expect any sensible answer from the candidate. A vote of thanks to the candidate for his address and entertaining evening, and another vote of thanks to the chairman, concluded the meeting, It seems a pity that in these days, when the very best of our nation's brains are needed for the great problems of reconstruction, that such weak candidates are put forward for Parliamentary honours. It seems a sin to put this electorate to the expense of an election under the existing circumstances.
