A man named William J ohn Davidson was arrested at Hamilton last week, and remanded to ] Auckland, on a charge of forging a cheque for £1 in the name of Robert William Cuthbert, hotel proprietor, Helensyille.
A social will be held at Makarau tomorrow (Friday) evening, -when the opportunity will be taken to present to Sergt. H. G. Hooper the D.C.M. won by nim in France.
An address on the prohibition question will be given in the Star Theatre, Helensville, on Wednesday evening next, Novemher sth, by Rev. John Dawson. Particulars appear in another column.
A social and dance in aid of Parakai Hall funds will be held in that building on Wednesday evening of next week, November sth. Musical items will be interspersed with the dances, and supper will be provided.
Accommodation out at the Springs is already overtaxed. Visitors coming into Helensville complain that all the boarding houses are all full, and they have to •eek quarters elsewhere. The tourist traffic is increasing each season, notwithstanding the fact that the place has not been boomed as a tourist and health resort as it should.
On Friday morning last Mr J.Stanaway was thrown from a cart in front of the Court House, owing to the horse suddenly swerving to the side of the road. The driver was thrown very heavily to the side of the road, and it was minutes before he recovered. The horse bolted as far as Bradly's smithy, running into a sulky, and damaging one of the splashboards of the latter. This brought the frightened animal to a standstill, but not before the cart was overturned and the contents scattered on the road.

Lately the Town Board appointed a juvenile as ranger. He displayed extraordinary enthusiasm, ability, and agility in rounding up straying stock, being no respecter of owners, breed of cattle, sex, size, or colour, and he was making a "pot" of money at the job. Two ladies, it is said, quarreled over the innovation, and hard words were used. A temporary halt was ordered, but perhaps a lesson has been taught those who thought the public roads were free grazing walks. —Tuakau Press.
An announcement of interest to stock owners and settlers generally appears elsewhere. Mr R. P. Kinlock, the wellknown veterinary surgeon, is now residing in Haupai, where he will continue his profession. Mr Kinlock, who has been practising in Auckland for the past 30 years, holds many important positions to various associations, amongst the number being honorary veterinary surgeon to the Auckland Agricultural Association, Auckland Racing Club, 3rd Regiment A.M.R., and also to the Helensville A. and P. Association.

The Anglican Ladies' Guild social m Thursday evening of last week wdfe easily the most successful the Guild tofe held, and a record number enjoyed themselves either with card playing or dah6r ing, the floor and music for the latter being both first-class. The long night social to be held by the Catholic community on Monday evening next in the Agricultural Hall, is being looked forward to with eager anticipation by all lovers of dancing, and special efforts are being made to ensure this function being a huge success. The proposed loans for road improvements in the Waitakere riding of the Waitemata County will have a farreaching effect, as such works will practically ensure a first-class metalled road from Auckland to Helensville. Parts of the main road are at present a source of dread to motorists and travellers generally, and the council's endeavour to effect much needed improvements will meet with general approval.
A most enjoyable time was spent at a welcome home social held at Mrs Channon's Central House on Monday evening, the gue9t of honour beingPrivate A. McMillan, a well-known local railway employee. A tip-top spread was partaken of by about forty friends and relatives of the family, and after thi3 important item had been satisfactorily attended to, dancing and games were indulged in till midnight, when all departed thoroughly satisfied with the splendid time they had had.
