KAUKAPAKAPA V i [Own Correspondent! ■■-~ ' J Arrangements are going on sapacMft*^. . the grand banquet to be held on : day, October Bth. A largely-attended . J meeting was held on Saturday to talk fr over further details. The question of || providing intoxicating liquors was again ■§' brought up, and a very animated discussion took place. On a vote being taken ri the proposal was defeated. Some of the * leading Auckland entertainers have pro- \ mised to assist, and a splendid evening is anticipated by all. A painful sensation was caused on > Thursday night last, when it was learned that Mrs Grey, wife of Mr Mark Grey, had passed away after only a few hours' illness. Mrs Grey, who was a daughter of Mrs Adams of Kaukapakapa, was well known in the district, and right up to the time of her death was engaged in her various duties on the farm and in the house. She leaves a family of five with their father to mourn their loss, and much sympathy is felt for them!, " ~ """ This week-end a strange discovery awaited the local residents. On passing the famous Pound, they found to their astonishment that it was inhabited by five horses and one bull. A number of other stray animals on the roadside were nearly driven in too (by mistake). Perhaps this is really a sign of an awakening, and surely its time. On a recent Sunday afternoon upwards of 50 cattle were at large on the " long paddock " within a short rajlius. Some other person, apparently, has a habit of saving his own grass by driving a herd of cattle on to the roads at night. Of course most of these people ought to know better, but " its whispered locally that many of them are too well known to be»interfered with. Hurry up with that ranger, please. .■/■"''"' *r
