KAUKAPAKAPA.

[Owjsf Correspondent!

** A-\argely attended public meet--i.O^s*|c^Leld on. Saturday evening to co*isT3er the- details of a final welcome to all returned soldiers .in the locality. Mrs W. Goodwin reported on the work done by the ladies since the '.'send-offs" and

V welcomes " were inaugurated.. Every boy who has left the district has been farewelled, and every one returning has received his welcome. The functions had all been most successful, and Mrs "" Goodwin reported that a credit balance was in hand of £15 ss. A vote of thanks to the ladies for their assistance and untiring , efforts was carried by 'acclamation. Mr F. Dye was then elected to the chair, and the meeting proceeded to discuss the final function. One or two speakers stated "^tbat-they had been asked to speak , on behalf of the non-dancers, who wished to join in, and wanted the evening arranged to suit all. It appeared that the general idea was to hold a grand ball, but it soon became evident that this would have to be modified. A considerable amount of discussion then took place as to the best way of pleasing everybody. It was finally decided to hold a grand ~ banquet on October 8, and to endeavour to arrange for a visit on that date from the Lyric Quartette, also to hold a grand ball on November 7th, the services of Bartlett's- orchestra to be secured. , Ticket^ for each function be, , double i€s.,__single 7s 6d, extra lady 2s 6d. Strong committees and sub-committee were then formed to carry out the arrangements. As a result of the above meetbeing prolonged beyond exthe usual session of trfcgjjMeiits Club was postponed. , Tfife ttext^tßeeting of the Club is tofrJkave special attractions. It will be held on Friday, October 3, (instead of Saturday), when Mr - T. Bloodworth, the well-known Labour advocate, will give an ? address on "New Zealand farmers and the Labour Party." This subject should be of great interest •to all. The local branch of the ■ Farmers' Union are amalgamating with.the Club for this meeting. It is hoped that a large number from the surrounding districts will also be present!; 3 that the old of Kaukapakapa's white elephant, that " scenic reserve," -r-officially named the Local Pound, f was again under discussion at a ? local meeting very recently. One I or two people have very nearly \ met with serious accidents dur■7 ing the last few weeks through r straying cattle,' especially at f£ fTtsigb&^t\ ; Wtfk^~~¥ftbAps if someone ■\ is kille*cr the authorities responsible may wake up. Why not

appoint a proper ranger in addif" Jtion to a pound-keeper. If cattle are to be allowed on the road L^jtiMring the day, make a tax of so (much per head, and let each

one wear a collar as is done in . other districts. The number licenr" sed should be limited, and strict /provision made that no cattle be rleffc on the roads after sunset. > Should this provision be broken, L impound the cattle whether licenor not. This would not only ! help the ratepayers financially, k" but would do away with a serious {.-evil. Why not wake up and do '* something^ at any. rate.
