IT CAN'T BE DONE.

Government is offering to advance the returned " digger " £50 with which to furnish his house. But this amount doesn't go very far in that direction at the present t;m». The " expert " attached to the staff of a big furnishing firm here estimates the cost of fitting up even a modest little fourroomed cottage (in a very plain and homely style) thus : bedroom £21 10s; living-room, £19 6s; kitchen £6 19s ; pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, etc., £10; blinds and curtains, £4. Add these amounts together, and they come to a lot more than fifty pounds for three rooms. Fifty might have sufficed before the war. It won't to-day, when a pair of good blankets can hardly be had for less than 50s.
