The Manukau County Council and Piako County Council sent representatives on a tour of inspection to Taranaki recently, and it is understood that extensive reading schemes will Bhortly be placed before the ratepayers.
An amusing story, which has the merit of being true, is being told in Hamilton. It ia said that a tenant, on leaving a house in Hamilton East, could not catch one of his hens, so left it. A fortnight later he went back and secured the hen, and was charged by the new tenant 1/for grazing !
The Americans charge 8 dollars alien tax on any Britisher going to America. A Te Kuiti resident who had to pay this recently tingles with anger every time it is mentioned to him. To be classed as an "alien" by the " blinking Yankees," as he calls them, stirs him up almost to a frenzy. Woe betide anybody he comes across who has a good word for the Americans.
