HELENSVILLE TOWN BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The adjourned monthly meeting of the above was held on Thursday evening last. PRESENT Comrs. J. Stewart (chairman), C. West, T. D. Johnson, H. Thompson, Jas. McLeod, and the clerk (Mr W. F. Raisher). MINUTES Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE _ Outward correspondence was confirmed. FIRE BRIGADE. It was reported that the test of the fire appliances, arranged to be made after the previous Board meeting, had not taken place. All the gear, however, was now in the Board's possession, in good order and condition. It was decided to advertise for applications from those wilting to join a voluntary fire' brigade, to be under the control of the Town Board. ELECTRIC LIGHTING. In regard to this matter, the chairman was of the opinion that there was not much chance of obtaining money or getting attention until the Victory War Loan now under way is finally disposed of. CEMETERY. The cemetery has received a measure of attention . lately, and fences have been repaired and the grounds cleaned up. Members were of opinion that the Waitemata County Council should assist in the upkeep of the cemetery, as use was made of it | by their ratepayers. ROAD DEVIATION. A letter was received from, the Waitemata County Council in regard to the matter of the deviation of the. Horseshoe Bend Road above the dam. Members remarked on the state of the water from the dam, owing to traffic on the road in question causing clay and mud to get into the dam.
Chairman: The Waitemata County Counil are annoying the Board all they can.
Cr West stated it was no good going-in for retaliation.
After discussion, Cr Johnson moved that the Board communicate with the Public Works Department and the Health Department, stating the position in regard to the dam, and enquiring what legal rights the Board had to close the road. —Seconded by Cr West and carried.
It was further decided (Cro. Thompson—McLeod) that the Board pay a visit of inspection to the watershed on Sunday next, September 28. DISPUTED RATES Mr V. McLeod wrote in regard to a rate notice received from the Board, and deducting £1 5s from his account, which, he stated, he should not be charged for, during the period he was on active service. It was decided to write to the Municipal Association in regard to the matter. [By Section 3 of the Local Authorities Empowering Act, 1915, power is given local authorities to remit or postpone payment of rates payable by members of Expeditionary Forces.] • GENERAL An application from the Agricultural Hall Society for per> mission to erect electric light poles along Mill Road was granted, subject to permission being first obtained from the Public Works Department.— (Johnson —Thompson). The (Auckland Branch of the Navy League applied for a sub. in connection with Lord Jellicoe's visit. —It was deoided to reply, stating that the Board had no funds available for this purpose. It was decided to call a public meeting shortly to discuss what form the proposed soldiers' memorial should take. No aocounts were presented for payment,
