BABIES TOO EXPENSIVE.
At a recent meeting of the Executive of the Farmers' Union it was stated that every time " a little stranger " made its appearance in a working man's home it meant an outlay of £15, and this was beyond the means of many people for whom, consequently, babies were too expensive ! It was further stated that, owing to this condition of affairs, certain " abominable practices " were of common occurrence, and that the birth-rate was seriously affected in consequence. One speaker remarked that it; seemed to him that the people who ought not to have children often had them, while those who ought to have them —didn't. Ultimately it was resolved to ask Government to establish free maternity homes in town and country.
