Doug. Fairbanks will again amuse the audience at Everybody's Theatre on Saturday evening next in an Artcraft picture, "The Man from Painted Post." His sunny smile is in evidence—-the smile that makes everyone feel happy, and he performs some daring athletic stunts.
Some interesting reading matter appears on page 4.

An epidemic of mumps is prevalent in and around Helensville at the present time, and quite a number of children and adults are down. A good number have also contracted heavy colds, with slight influenza symptoms.
To-night, at the Lyric Theatre, the Kaipara Rugby Union are holding a dance, in aid of funds. As this is their initial venture this season, it is hoped that there will be a first-rate attendance. The cost of admission is gentlemen 1/6, ladies 1/. Supper will be provided, and it is promised that both floor and music will be A 1.
The new main rolls are now completed for most electoral districts. The new district of Roskill has taken a good number of the old Eden electoral names, and Eden, which extends from the city to Kaipara Heads, contains 7884 names, as against 15,250 on the old boundaries. Roskill contains 10,567 electors. A further new electorate in the Auckland provincial district is Rotorua.
The following men from the Kaipara district are returning on the transport Ulimaroa: C. Betteridge (KaukapaTcapa), G. A. Dean (Buckland's Beach), W. RGibbs, H. H. Hargreaves, C. D. Jeffs (Kaipara), J. .1. H. McKay (Maungaturoto), Sergt. F. Pengelly, P. L. McDonald (Woodhill), R. B. Pinchin (Paiakai), E. Shepherd (Helensville).
The returned soldiers' social last Thursday evening, tended as a compliment to Mr W. Foebroke, who has been of genuine assistance to the Kaipara Branch, was exceedingly well attended, and those present spent a thoroughly enjoyable time. The usual appurtenances to a successful social -floor, music, and supper—were all in evidence, so no wonder theae socials are becoming more and more popular. Tastes in reading matter vary, and for one person who fancies a work of historical or political interest, there are at least a dozen who are content with a William Le Quex romance or an exciting Charles Garvice affair. The books which are in the greatest demand in the local library, it is stated, are those which possess a piquant flavour. This is in keeping with the times, when both in the " movies " and the daily papers, the " eternal triangle " is largely featured.
The Helensville Library is now fairly well patronised, and although containing a large number of readable books, there are many which it seems a shame to give -shelf room to. A number of new books are in evidence, but some of the latest productions are missing. We understand that a few new books are added each month, the selection being left to a responsible authority. It is desirable that a fresh supply be chosen now. as there is at present a good selection of suitable works on the market.
Although the returned soldiers' meeting was well attended on Thurday evening last, the number present did not fully represent the total who have returned and are living in this district. It is a fact that many " diggers," who should take an interest in the welfare of their comrades, are not doing so. There are those who are so situated that, upon ooming back, they do not require assistance from the Repatriation Boards, and these are the men who should exhibit the spirit of comradeship, and help those of their fellow soldiers who are not so fortunate.
Joy-riding in a Maori cart is not very fashionable, but is very enjoyable, if the experiences of some visitors to a health resort not a hundred miles from Helensville can be taken as an example. Three ladies of a sporting disposition begged a lift from the Maori woman driving, and set off blithely for town on a recent Saturday, astonishing and amusing the staid and sporting section of the community in turn. A trip through the main streets was provocative of much fun, the Maoris especially enjoying the joke. " Just out and out fun," said one of the party, "to liven up a holiday and make the most out of the few opportunities for enjoyment that occur." The powerfully dramatic picture-drama " Idle Wives," which will be shq-vyn at the I^yric on Friday evening, is a Universal production of xemarkable quality and plot, It is a seven reel picture, but the interest is so well sustained that it hqldsthe attention at full pitch to the end. The story is of three sets of people all contemplating separate acts of folly. By a coincidence they all attend a picture show where they see three sets of people actually committing the follies they were contemplating, and thus realise the danger they were courts iug. In parts the picture moves with breathless speed, and shquld be a great force for good since it so unflinchingly reveals the penalties of wrong doing. The supporting programme is of the highest order. Two men want scrub-dutting near Helensville, For Bronchial Coughs, take Woods Great Peppermint Cure.
Applications are invited for cleaning ; Helensville school A rather novel use to which a motor cycle may be put was demonstrated in Balclutha the other night, when a sack '^ of sawdust, bearing a man as weight; v , was towed round the hall in PrePar4flA| the floor for a ball. Two punt loads of cattle were brought to Heleneville after the Farmers' Union sale at Manga whare recently, for Waikato destinations. There ie likely to be a big inquiry from Waikato for cattle if the coming season is at all a grassy one. A well-known Kaipara identity, John u'± Bagley, died at the Auckland Hospital - on Sunday last, from the effects of a paralytic stroke which he received- last ; week. Deceased, who was 49 yean of age, followed the occupation of * fisher- - man. One of the most sensible things the Government has done for some time is j in respect to the compilation of the electoral rolls for the forthcoming election. As far as Helensville is concerned, the task of correcting the Kaipara main roll has been entrusted to the Post Office, that department having an j official busily engaged on the job at present. The curse of this, age is Efficiency. Efficiency strives to make Machines of Men —and loses the purpose of Life. When we seek to make the Thing and not the Man —both are failures! - Strive to " speed 'em up " —to reduce "Motions" and presently the Worker is an automaton, and the product a tragic monument to Labour. TProduce First Quality Men—and First Quality Work naturally follows! Man alone is worthy of Development.—(From The Fra.) Savage Club Concert on Saturday night— very special. An original note was struck by a delegate at tbe Congregational Assembly at Melbourne recently, says the Argus. He said the churches should " keep more to the truth." In a hymn, he continued, they sing " Take my silver and gold, and not a mite will I withhold." What was really meant was " Take the mite, and I will hold the rest." Such hymns, he said, should be altered and made more like those sung by little children. Also, the delegate added, there ' should be "more smiles from the ministers." He - suggested that whenever a preacher saw a member asleep he should call for a hymn. Another delegate interjected that there should be more " hims" in tbe church. " Grapho" furnishes the following character reading of a local resident, ' which is stated by friends to be surprisingly accurate :—" You are practical, • with plenty of commonsense, levelheaded and with some business ability. You have a good deal of independence of character, like to go your own way about things. Your temper is even, as a rule, and you are not difficult to get on with so long as people do not attempt to drive you. You are not very impulsive. ; When called upon to make up your mind ''■:■-. about anything you do not usually act hastily, you look before you leap. You are. not very demonstrative, but if you love it is with all your heart! You ' i would make a true friend." V When e'er life's troubles may befall, • A. friend in need is loved by all; ■"""*■. Despite of sorrow, strife and sin," A kindly act makes all men kin. When winter coughs and colds assail Each one has but himself to blame If he rejects a friend so sure As Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.
