|OWN CORRESPONDENTI
A very large gathering of fiiends from Wainui, Kaukapakapa, and the surrounding districts assembled in the Wainui Hall on Tuesday evening, Bth July, to welcome home Major Milligan, D.S.O. Mr T. Lamont was chairman, and in a nice speech complimented Major Milligan on his long service at the front (he having gone with the sth Reinforcements), and on his success in the field, and for having received such distinction. He also wished him every success in the future. Major Milligan, in reply, thanked Mr Lamont and all those present for the very hearty reception tendered to him, and during his remarks he paid a very high tribute to the New Zealand Division, stating that they were second to none at the Front. A very enjoyable dance followed, for which Mr J. Pascoe acted as M.C. in a very efficient manner. The music was supplied by Messrs Glanville and Cochran. Several songs and recitations were given during the evening.
An old and respected resident of Kaukapakapa in the person of Mrs Ellen Papson passed away at Auckland on Saturday last. The interment took place on Monday after the arrival of the train, at the Kaukapakapa cemetery. A large crowd gathered to pay their last respects to the deceased lady. The late Mrs Rapson had been for many years a member of the Anglican Church, and in absence of Rev. Venables, the funeral service was read by Mr Snelling (lay reader). The body was first taken into the Methodist Church where the first part of the service was held. The Church was crowded and a number gathered outside. Mr Dye officiated at the organ, and as the body left the Church, played the ''Dead March in Saul." The late Mrs Rapson was in her 80th year and had been ailing for some time past. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family.
On Thursday evening last a large crowd gathered at the Kaukapakapa Hall to hear the Concert Party's first entertainment. The party proved to be Mr, Mrs and Miss Fewell, Mr and Mrs Pace, The programme had been well arranged, and a pleasing innovation, which might well be copied by others, was the printing of the items on a large blackboard, so that the audience could see the whole programme. A number of sacred quartettes were well rendered, whilst each of the vocalists gave solos. Although greatly handioapped by very severe colds, each one carried out their parts well, and encores were the order of the evening. Mra Fewell proved an extremely capable accompanist. The concert was largely by way of an experiment, but proved a great success, and it is hoped that the party will appear again in the near future. At the close of the concert a dainty supper was handed round, during which Mr Pace, on behalf of a few friends, presented Miss Fewell with a lady's letter case. Miss Fewell has been extremely popular in K.aukapakapa, and has always proved ready to help with anything that has been arranged* particularly in the musical and artistic lines. She has now left for a while to take up a situation in Auckland, but her friends hope that she may often return to her home and to the district where a warm welcome will always await her.
The usual meeting of the Men's Social Club took place on Saturday evening last, when a games evening was held. Qne of the most popular games was ping-pong, and in this tournament there were quite a good number of entries. The winner of the first prise was Mr W, McLean, while Mr J. Sinclair secured the second trophy.
Owing to the alteration by the Government of the Peace Day celebrations, the arrangements locally have had to be changed. At a meeting held on Tuesday last the ladies decided to arrange
a special children's function for
Saturday, 19, th inst. The children 'are'^q assemble for games, eto?,' at 2.30,' the^sbhools from roundabout having received invitations to co-operate. Tea will afterwards be served, and from all accounts ;t; \^ijl be a real good spread. Aiter tea there is to' be" a bonfire and fireworks, whilst a public meeting at the Hall will close the celebrations. A. large attendance all day is expected.
