THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE" HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, July 10, 1919 PEACE CELEBRATIONS.
IT is regrettable that the effort to celebrate peace in Helensvile has had to be" abandoned owing to public indifference. After seeing the five years' war period through, and taking part in many patriotic efforts, it would have been a fitting finale to have held suitable demonstrations, and displayed some sort of enthusiasm over the signing of peace. Howeve^ it is not to be, and residents (or the majority of them) will doubtless migrate to Auckland, where, from present indications, peace celebrations are likely to be a " frost." All the proposed fixtures have been dropped, and the Celebrations Committee have fallen back on the leading football authorities and the Heturned Soldiers' Association to provide the public with some form of aiuusenient. For their share in the proceedings the R,S.A. members are to be rewarded with a lunch and a bottle of beer in the Domain. One of the members of the Celebrations Committeepartioularly emphasised the bottle of beer. Returned soldiers, we have no doubt, will appreciate the hospitality of a grateful city. In direct contrast is Dunedin's effort in the matter of celebrating peace. An elaborate programme, extending over several days, has been arranged, and, subsidy or no subsidy, the people of the Southern city will foot the bill.
