THE SHORTAGE OF COAL.
CUTTING DOWN OF TRAINS
The efforts of the Railway De- N partment to conserve its existing supply of coal has resulted in a drastic curtailment of all train services throughout both islands. The journey to Wellington from Auckland now occupies two and a-half days, and on almost every other line in New Zealand the time now taken is double that of normal times. The service for this district, frtfm Auckland to Wellsford and further north, was never considered a good one, even by the most optimistic of persons. With the cutting out of the express train to and from Auckland, which took placeduring the war period, and was due to a shortage ,of staff, :' , Helensville was limited to three very indifferent trains per day U>\ and from the city. By the latest cut in the service, the trains have been reduced to one * per day while on four days of the v week en early morning train will be run from Auckland right through to Wellsford. Ranganui will have one train per week, * arriving there on Wednesday afternoons.
