A PENNY IN THE SLOT.
Three small boys appeared at the Auckland Police Court the other day charged with stealing 4/- worth of chocolates, It seems that the trio were on their way to Sunday School when they came across a penny-in-the-slot chocolate-machine, and instead of reserving their pennies for the Sunday School cqllpction in aid of the conversion of the heathen, or some other laudable object, they dropped them into the slot in exchange for chocolates. That would not have been a sin past forgiveness, perhaps, but these misguided juveniles did not stop there. They secured' a penny to a piece of wire, and having dropped it in the slot pulled it out again, and in this way more than half emptied the machine of its chocolates. As they all proved to be good boys under ordinary circumstances the Court let them off with a talking to, the parents being ordered to pay for the chocolates. The urchins . acted very improperly, of c v.i'rv," but there ere times in tin- lives of even the best of boys when the seductions of chocolates will outweigh even the conversion of the heathen. Isn't it sad ?
