SCHOOL BOOKS.
NECESSSARY REDUCTION' IN
EXPENSE
Many parents will rejoice to loam that the book question in the State Schools is being given consideration (says the Dominion). It has been frequently pointed out that for many years past there has been little or nu uniformity in the books used in our State schools. A child with one set of books (arithmetic, geography, grammar, reader, eto,) wouid find, on being sent to another school (same standard) that the books being used were entirely different from those he possessed, with the result that a call was made on the family purse for no strong reason, other than the one represented by the learnings or idiosyncracies of the headmasters. An attempt was made to unify in one direction by eliminating the Reader and replacing it with the School Journal, but there are instances where the Reader is still favoured. Quite recently a conference was held between the Chief- Inspector (Mr Bakewell) and the headmasters of the Wellington schools, with the result that the book bill for the future is Jikely to be considerably curtailed./
