SWIMMING BATH.
FOR HELENSVILLE SCHOOL
DELAY EXPLAINED
THE following letter has been forwarded by the Secretary of the Helensville School Committee (Mr F. R. Eames) to the Secretary of the Auckland Education Board :—
- Sir, —As regards the suggestion in ray letter of Jan. 17, in reference to the formation of a school swimming bath, I beg to inform you that the matter was considered by the Helensville School Committee at its last meeting, and I was directed to approach your Board with a request that it would, if it could see its way clear to do bo, carry the work out. I was alao requested to point out to you the position the Committee is placed in owing, to the delay, and its reasons for considering the course proposed would be the one most likely to result in the earliest completion of the project, with satisfaction to all concerned.
So far as the Committee is concerne d, it is subject to adrerae criticism on account of having raised money for a specific purpose which it has not carried out. The contributors are much irritated at what appears to be interminable and unnecessary delay in the construction of such a greatly to be desired adjunct to the school as the swimming bath would undoubtedly be.
Another point I have been directed to draw your attention to is that at the tine the estimates were made out the cost of material and labour was considerably less than it is at present.
Had there been no delay and the work be«n carried out when the estimate was made, the amount collected with the subsidy applied for, would have covered the cost of carrying out the project. The Committee, however, now realise that probably th« funds may be rather less than the amount required, and has directed me to approach your Board with a request that it undertake the work, utilising the money raised by the School Committee, and any subsidy that may be obtained from the Department, and supplementing by a grant from your Board such a turn as would complete the baths according to the plan* submitted, or such modification of the plans as it may deem advisable,
