TOWN BOARD MATTERS.

HELENSVILLE CEMETERY

RESERVE,

This matter came up for discussion at the last meeting of the Helensville Town Board. The fund has a credit balance of £18 Is 6d.

It was decided to cut the teatree on the north side and remove the fence to the boundary ; this would take in another threequarters of an acre, and when the clearing of the scrub is completed it is hoped that a better footpath can be formed from Garfield Road to the summit. It was also decided to weed and clean up the occupied portion of the Reserve. Those holding allotments are asked to assist as much as possible towards this end. PUBLIC LIBRARY. Apparently few people in the vicinity of Helensville realise that in the Town District there is a Public Library well stocked with 1600 books. In addition to facilities for cheap and good reading to those in the township, ■ the Librarian is anxious to cater for the requirements of would-be subscribers in the country districts.

The Library account has a credit at. 31st August, 1917, of £2 14s 7d; the receipts for the year ending 31st August were £22 6s 6d; expenditure on books during the 12 months was £21 9s lOd; insurance, £1; Bank charges keeping a/c, 10s ; leaving a balance of £2 0s 3d in hand the Ist of this month.

The Librarian's salary is £26 per year, which is paid out of General Fund.

Owing to war conditions prevailing the Government subsidy has been withdrawn. The public are asked to support the Library more liberally.

The number of subscribers varies from time to time ; there are 53 at present, but only a few of these subscribe right through the year.
