MAKARAU
|OWN CORRESPONDENTI
Many and varied are the ways of raising money in these days for the Red Gross, and the people of Tahekeroa and Makarau (combined) are doing their best to gather a good amount. Most of the householders are giving social evenings, etc., in turn, and their efforts are meeting with great success.
Mr and Mrs E. Smith's entertainment took the form of a basket social, and was held in the Makarau Hall on Friday last. Despite the inclemency of the weather there was a good number of visitors, some of whom came a long distance. The total takings for the evening amounted to over £33, which was considered very satisfactory. There was keen competition for the baskets, which were auctioned by Mr F. Elvin. The honour of taking the highest price for a basket fell to little Miss Gardner (aged five months), daughter of Rifleman R. A. Gardner, who is on active ""Service in France; this basket was knocked down for £5 9s. The " Queen's" came a good second with £5. Others were also sold for good prices.
