A cheque to the amount of £4 3s 9d has been handed to Mr H. Aitkenhead (Chairman Waitemata County Council) from the Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs, being 25 per cent of the nett proceeds from the V.M.C.A. War Picture which was shown in Helensvilte some 12 months ago. The money has been deposited to the credit of the Helensville and Parakai branches of the A.W.P.L.
We draw our readers attention to Screaton's ad. in this week's issue, re Cash Department opening in the ECHO Buildings. It is quite evident that the demand for cash business at lowest prices is on. the increase; it is also evident that this firm intends catering for this class of business, and in view of their progress in the past, we have no doubt that this new department will be attended by great success and ba appreciated by the public. *
The most important football match of the season was played in Stewart's paddock, Helensville, on Saturday afternoon last, between teams representing Otamatea and Helensville. A great deal of interest was centred in the event, and the weather being fine, a good attendance of the public paid admission. Both teams played in the best of spirits, and the game ended with Otamatea 11 points and Helensville 3 points. The' takings, £7 15s, go to the Women's Patriotic League. In the evening at the Lyric Pictures a collection was made to defray expenses of the visiting team, with the result that £4 13s was netted.
There was, as usual, a good attendance at tlie euchre and dance, (promoted by the Catholic Church Committee) in the Agricultural Hall on Monday evening last, and an enjoyable time was spent all round. The floor was in good order, Miss Rimmer presided at the piano, and Mr Jas. Hand acted as M.0., while the supper left nothing to be desired. The card tables were well patronised, and the games keenly contested. Mrs Channon provad the highest scorer among the ladies, and was the recipient of a silver butter-dish, presented by Miss Bradly The gentleman's prize, a pipe, was won by Mr E. McLeod, and was donated by Mr Turnwald. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss M. Dowling and Mr T. Hafford.
