According to the German Press, "Sunday's dinner" in England now consists of two courses only—potato peelings and cheese-rind. Trust the Hun to keep a watch on the Rind! " General, do tell me when the war will be over—you must know!" implored a gushing lady of Sir William Robertson the other day. " When we've 1 won it, madam," he replied in his stolidist tone. A good story is being told of a resident of a certain Taranaki town who had been annoyed for some time past by neighbours' cattle eating a very fine ornamental hedge he had planted. With a view to putting a stop to the practice the owner posted up a couple of printed notices warning owners of stock that the hedge had been sprayed with poison. Now conns the sequel. A, few days ago one of the band of marauding cows was seen to lean over the fence and make a hearty meal of a portion of the hedge, and then, as if to add > flavour to the green-stuff, it deliberately tore down one of the notices and ate that. Crude were the drugs and clinic ways In what were called "the good old days," For science then was at its birth, And what it taught was little worth, They knew no anaesthetics then Nor means of storing oxygen ; And what was just as sad, be sure, They had no Woods' Great Peppermint Cure.
