VALEDICTORY.

THERE was a record attendance at the farewell social tendered to Mr and Mrs McGarvey and family in the Agricultural Hall on Thursday evening last, 14th inst. Town and district were both exceedingly well represented as Mr and Mrs McGarvey were well-known and highly esteemed among a very wide circle of friends, and their departure is a matter of regret to everyone. A most enjoyable evening was spent by all present. Songs were rendered by Messrs White, J. Carter, R. Screaton and M. McGarvey, and Mr P. McLeod gave a couple of splendid recitations. Miss Rimmer presided at the piano, and dancing was continued merrily till midnight. Supper, was provided by the ladies, and was greatly appreciated. The Rev. Venables, on behalf of the residents of Helensville and the surrounding district, in a neat speech, presesented Mrs McGarvey with a silver fish service, Mr McGarvey with a case of pipes, and Mrs Rowles with a silver entree dish. After referring to the esteem in which they were held, the speaker said that not only had Mrs McGarvey been an indefatigable wai worker, but she had lent a helping hand to every cause, regardless of denomination, and the entertainments organised by her were always successful, both socially and financially. A pleasing coincidence was that it was Mr and Mrs McGarvey's silver wedding anniversary, and the speaker wished them many long years of happiness and prosperity.
