A grand Red Cross social will be held in the Star Theatre on Thursday, 30th inst., when the winners of the apple guessing competition will be announced.

It is reported that Captain Coates, M.P. for Kaipara, who has wrenched his knee or ankle while on active service, will shortly return to New Zealand.

On Wednesday, June sth, a big sale of household furniture and effects will be held at Mrs McGarvey's residence, Helensville.

A crowded house again greeted the Maori Entertainers in the Lyric Theatre on Wednesday evening last. This talented company intend shortly to make a tour of the North, and devote the funds to patriotic purposes. Kia Ora.

At their meeting on Tuesday evening, last the Helensville A. and P. Association decided to spend £300 in extensive alterations and additions to the Agricultural Hall. The improvements include a lighting and drainage system, etc, making this building one of the most up-to-date in the town.

A vote of thanks was accorded by the Waitoraata County Council to the settlers who voluntarily unloaded, from railway trucks at Ohirangi, the metal for the main north road between Wharepapa and Helensville, which assistance, the engineer reported, had resulted in the saving- of some hundreds of pounds of the Council's funds.

The Hobart " Mercury " states that a fisherman recently found a German mine on the Tasmanian coast. The matter waa reported to the naval authorities, and the min<* was exploded by rifle fire. The Parakai branch of the Women's Patriotic League had a very successful canvas for the Red Cross shop, resulting in: —7 sacks pumpkins, melons and marrows ; 1 sack potatoes ; 1 sack c arrpts ; 1 case apples ; 2 ducks ; also onions, chokos, beet, honey, cut flowers eggs, 2 rabbits, cake, jams, preserves,, groceries, and articles of clothing. The Committtee has reserved a pair of bantams that were donated, and will put them up for auction at the next stock sale.. In addition to this 19/6 was donated in lieu of goods.
