ARSENICAL SPRAY FOR GORSE
H.J.P., Fernhill—l would like to know whether there is any spraying-mixture that would kill young gorse after burning the standing gorse ? The Fields Division —A mixture which can be home-made, and which has proved effective when applied to gorse, is 31b crude arsenic and 21b caustic soda dissolved by boiling in 3 gallons of water. For spraying use one gallon of the mixture to 10 gallons of water. As it is poisonous, stock should be kept off for ten or twelve days after applying.
WESTERN WOLTHS RYE- GRASS FOR FORAGE CROP W. J. P. —Kindly recommend the best kind of green feed for dairy cows for growing in a small paddock which is covered with sorrel. The ground is fairly well drained. We prefer soft turnips, but the sorrel smothers them. The Fields Division—There is nothing better for the conditions named than Western Wolths ryegrass, sown at the rate of not less than 301b per acre, with 2cwt of basic superphosphate.
