The usual monthly euchre and dance in connection with the Church of England Ladies' Guild, will be held in the Star Theatre on Monday evening next, October 1. A meeting of the Helensville Acclimatization Society will be held in the Town Board Office this evening (Thursday), at 7.30 p.m. It is estimated that the proposed increases in pensions and allowances for both divisions will involve an expenditure of more than one million pounds per year. Monday last was observed as Dominion Day, but in Helensville the only noticeable features were the Banks being closed, and the children commencing their Michaelmas holidays. . '

There is an extraordinary vacancy on the Helensville Town Board, owing to the resignation of Mr E. T; Field. Nominations will be received up till to-morrow (Friday), September 28. A fine mob of 105 head of young cattle passed through Helensville on Monday last for the Crosslands Estate. The beasts were railed up from Hastings, and looked none the worse for the long journey. As a result of the recent bombardment of Ostend by British naval forces, a floating dock was. sunk and workshops and a dockyard completely demolished, and seven other buildings damaged. A good muster of Senior Cadets and Defence Rifle Corps were on parade last Saturday afternoon, under Lieut. Garry. They were marched on to the Rifle Range, where some very useful drill was performed in a creditable manner. Staff Sergt.-Major Johnstone was the instructor. A splendid model of a launch was turned out by Mr A. Forrester, Helensville, last week, to the order of Mr Mason of Crosslands. The vessel is fitted with a very high speed 20 h.p. engine, which is intended to drive her about 12 miles an hour. It is advertised elsewhere that Mr H. Aitkenhead (a candidate for the Maraetahi Riding) will address the ratepayers on Tuesday evening next, October 2nd, in the Woodhiil Hall; and in the Parakai Hall on Thursday, October 4th »t 7.30 p.m. The programme to be screened at the Star Theatre on Wednesday evening 'next will include a Mutual masterpiece j entitled " The Mating," with the popular and clever Bessie Barri scale in a part that will attract for its sincerity and charm—a delightful story of a school girl's trials, troubles, joys and romance. A piece of copper, which formed part of the ship Orpheus, has come into the possession of the city of Auckland.. The relic in question was offered to, and accepted by, the City Council last week by the Hon. E. Mitchelson, on behalf of Mr J. Wilson, of Motutara, Waimauku, Kaipara. We also have in our possession a relic of the same vessel. It is in the form of a Bible, made out of part of her decking. The Orpheus was wrecked on the Manukas bar on Friday, February 7, 1863, 54 years ago.
