" Hero of Submarine D 2 " —Some day, when the war is over, the world will be thrilled with stories of the heroes of Britain's fighting submarines, and the Vitagraph Company has anticipated the day when the censor lets up, and has produced a remarkable triumph in filmic enterprise, depicting with striking realism the exploits of a submarine hero. Granted unusual facilities for getting the real thing, the result is the introduction of the first actual authenticated scene of the interior of a fighting submarine. This is cleverly dovetailed into the story, and forms the setting for the most thrilling episode in the play, a powerful naval drama illuminated by a series of sensational incidents, which include the blowing up of a mine-field and the firing of a man out of the j torpedo tube of a fighting submarine. The supporting items include Bu Fisher's latest cartoon scream by the comical pair, Mutt and Jeff, and the usual topical budget of cinema news. —Saturday Afternoon— Grand Picture Matinee from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Spleudid big programme. Bring the children. —Saturday Evening— " Hand of Peril " —James Kester ia a Government secret agent on the trail of a band of counterfeiters, particularly Frank Lambert, head of the gang, who in addition to his skill as a counterfeiter, is the only man who can fill in the perforations of a used' bank note. Kester cleverly finds and enters the headquarters of the band when it is empty, but he is caught. Lambert's daughter, Maura, finding her father is for killing the agent helps him to escape. Lambert kills one of his gang, who before dying tells Maura she is not Lambert's child but was stolen as a baby and reared to a life of crime.- Lambert escapes capture a second time by a ruse. Kester later trails him to a midnight rendezvous, and a revolver battle between the two men in the dark culminates in a hand-to-hand encounter in which Kester ultimately proves victor He persaudes Maura to return to the straight road, and the end ia a happy one. —Tuesday Evening— " West Wind " —Soldiers on a punitive expedition against the warring Sioux find a girl who has been abducted from her father's ranch in the hands of' a rascally half-bred cowboy. Amy Benam, known as West Wind, daughter of John Benam, a ranch owner, is abducted by Girot, a half-bred cowboy, and her father is killed. Kennard, a young army captain in love with Amy, and Sullivan, the ranoh foreman, head a search party ; but Girot dares the rapids in a canoe, and brings the girl to the Sioux oamp. She is aided by Mahwissa (an Indian squaw) to escape, and hides in a cave, where Sullivan finds them, but they are attacked by Girot and his band. Kennard arrives in time to save the women and kill Girot, but Sullivan dies from wounds. Kennard's party is surrounded by a large band of Indians and comes near to being wiped out, but Mahwissa brings up the troops. The Indians are defeated, and Amy and Kennard are married.
