MONDAY,
San Gabrlelle Won—Fighting of Great Intensity—German Fleet in Riga Gulf—Russians Regain Lost Ground.
The Italians have strongly 1 consolidated the summit of Monte San Gabrielle, four miles north-east of Gorz, after the height had changed hands several times. Fighting is still proceeding on the slopes of the mountain with an intensity which is said to surpass even the Carso battles. The Bussians have recaptured some of the lost ground on the Riga front. They are advancing towards Lemberg, 30 miles east of Riga. The German fleet now commands the Gulf of Riga, haying .^Ostroyed the protecting minef***eld. The Russian fleet has ret" tired to the entrance of the Gulf of Finland. \ General Korniloff and his principal lieutenants have been ar- . rested. . Seyen of his officers were lynched in Finland. German attacks were launched 6n the Aisne and Verdun fronts, without success. The British have improved positions and gained ground on the Ypres front.
TUESDAY Republic of Ruscia—War Cabinet Being Formed—Kerenesky offers to Resign—Enemy said to Intend New Attack. Russia has been proclaimed a republican State. A war cabinet of five will probably be formed. M. Kerensky announces his readiness to resign in order to allow the party, leaders to compose their differences. The Russians continue to hold their own east of Riga, the troops showing much stability and firmness. The Russian commander on the centre front has warned his troops that he has reliable information that the enemy will attempt to break through to Dvinsk and Minsk. Officers who attempted to raise a revolt in Finland in favour of General Korlinoff were lynched by soldiers.
A British raid at Cherisy, near Bullecourt, penetrated the outskirts of the village. Civilians are being sent from the Belgian towns of Roulers,' Ostend and Caurtrai.
The Austrian losses on Monte San Gabrielle are proving so heavy, prisoners state, that the enemy must shortly abandon his remaining positions on the mountain.
WEDNESDAY Hammering at Lens — Canadians Release Gas—Russians Gaining Ground —New War Cabinet of Moderates. The position of the Germans in Lens is increasingly hopeless. The town is a vast ruin arid even by tunnelling underground the enemy does riot obtain safety, as the Canadians frequently drench dug-outs and cellars with gas. German reports indicate that the artillery dual in Flanders is growing more violent, the allies using drumfire.
Bombing excursions have been undertaken by British and French airmen. The French attacked military points in Westphalia, Wurtemburg, Alsace, and Lorraine. British aircraft bombed enemy warships on the coast of Belgium. A large destroyer ,was hit, a trawler sunk, and another hit and probably sunk. The British used machine - guns against a force of 2000 enemy infantry. The Russians have gained seven miles towards Riga, and are driving back the enemy on a wide front. The morale of the army is stated to be splendid. The outstanding feature of the political situation is that moderates preponderate on the new jjiVar Cabinet. M. Kerensky is S^%pnly Socialist. THURSDAY Italian Activities — Offensive in Balkans — Isonzo Battle Not Ended—Slight Gains on Ypres. A powerful Italian offensive, is reported to be in progress in the the Balkans. The army based on "Valona is moving eastward through Southern Albania, thus menacing the Bulgarians' right flank. The Italian offensive on the Isonzo front is not ended. Preparations are being made for further attacks. The Russians are making progress at some points on the Riga front, and the Roumanians have captured fortified positions in Moldavia, The British have made a slight gain on the Yyres front. There is great artillery activity in this sector.
