The many fritnds of Mr Dan Stewart will be pleased to hear that he has quite recovered from his late illness, and is now moving about again out-doors the same as ever. A very satisfactory stock sale was held by the North Auckland Farmers' Co:-op. at Helensville on Tuesday last, when record prices were the order oftne day. Hon. Myers has been notified that all stocks of white lead in America are being conserved for war purposes, and further export is unlikely. The Methodist Church, Helensville, is now being stripped of its shingle roof (which has stood for the past thirty years), and replaced with paroid roofing. Mr A. Becroft is the contractor. Mr J. Carter, manager of the Union Bank, Helensville, left for Australia on Tuesday last, for a month's holiday. Mr Parkes has taken charge during Mr Carter's temporary absence. Mr A. G. Menzies, of Auckland, vrill be the preacher at the Presbyterian services at Woodhill, Kaukapakapa and Helensville on Sunday next, September 16th, and Rev Hodson at Parakai at 730 p.m.
It is anticipated that Parliament will be open for another four or five weeks, and the business remaining is the Liquor Bill and amendments to the Act relating to soldiers' pensions.
The conquering of Russia by Germany greatly simplifies the enemy's plans, and to a large extent reduces the effectiveness of the British Navy blockade.
Mr T. D. Johnson, the local plumber, will be absent from Helensville tomorrow (Friday), attending the Medical Board examination in Auckland. This will make the fifth examination for Mr Johnson, he' having previously enlisted four times.
It is prophesied by those in the know that Parliament will not consent to an earlier closing of hotel bars than 8 p.m. and the general impression is that they will open at 9.m. So the early morning imbiber will have to wait juat a little longer.
The heaviest rain storm, accompanied by hail, that has occurred for many years was experienced on Monday afternoon last, completely blocking up all the water channels in .the township. Fortunately it did not last long, and the water soon got away, though not before considerable damage had been done to several portions of the streets.
In order to raise funds for the erection of a memorial to the boya who have, left this district to fight for King and country the Helensville Women's . Patriotic League has arranged to hold a stall outside the Star Theatre every Friday evening (commencing to-morrow) for the s?le of produce, flowers, etc. The object is a laudable one, and worthy of every assistance.
