MONDAY. Gun Battle in West-Great Duel in Flanders—Russians Still Retiring —Roumanians Gnin seven milesGerman Air Raid on Paris. A' great artillery battle is raging on the western front, particularly in Flanders, where during the last 48 hours the I British bombardment has been of a portentous character Reconnoitring parties have reached as far as the enemy's second line. The Germans have failed in fresh attacks on the Aisne front. Since April they have used practically one-third of their army herj> and in the Champagne, and ■baiM^^tained enormous losses "^MBptompensating gain. .±|.e Russian retreat in Galicia continues. More resistance is developing in Northern Galicia, but between the Dniester and J the Carpathians the line is still ( '"■ swaying east. An attack has been made on Paris by German aeroplanes.

TUESDAY Russian Rout Stayed-—Troops Preparing to Resist'—Germans reach Bukovlna—Guns Thundering In Flanders—Bombardment i,Head in England. , There are signs of a change for the better in the Russian troops in Galicia. Panic is giving place to a sense of shame, and units which were recently in headlong flight are entrenching and preparing to resist. The collapse of the Galician army was brought about by German intrigue. The Germans claim to have reached the border ofithe Austrian crown- j land of Bukovina, which lies between Galicia and Roumania. The Roumanians continue to develop their success in Middle Moldavia. Their advance has reached a depth of ten miles on a front of 20 miles. The artillery duel in Flanders continues with even greater intensity. The Germans are lavish with shells, but the British are replying with double the number. British aeroplanes are dropping bombs 40 miles behind the enemy lines. The sound of guns was heard on the south-east coast of England.

WEDNESDAY " Russia Will Recover "—Mr Lloyd George Confident — Morale of Troops Improving—Gun and Air Activity in Flanders. The Germans claim to have reached the eastern boundary of Galicia, and to have entered the Russian Government of Podolia. The Russians claim that their defence on the frontier was successful. Mr Lloyd George states that he has receiyed information that Russia will recover and become as formidable as ever. The stern action taken by the Russian Army Commanders against spies and deserters is having a good effect on the morale of the troops, and correspondents send more hopeful reports. Cavalry are spread along the front of the retreat and enemy agents who attempt to create panics are quickly de~ tected and executed. The gun battle on the Flanners Affront still rages furiously, the /noise of the cannonade being heard on the outskirts of London. The Germans are said to expect an attack. Sir Douglas .^Haig has not yet moved.
