HELENSVILLE TOWN BOARD.
THURSDAY, JULY 12TH, 1917
PRESENT Comrs. J. F. Lambert (chairman), H. Thompson, H. Graham, H. Aitkenhead, E. T. Field, A. Becroft, Jas. Stewart, and the clerk (Mr W. F. Raisher). MINUTES Minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE . ' Outward correspondence was confirmed. THE POUND j The Chairman stated that the Pound notice board had been rewritten and put in order. He also stated that the Pound-keeper had been instructed, to take the names of owners of straying cattle with the object of prosecuting, and in order to do this he was allowed to stop work earlier. Com. Becroft thought this was not advisable, and they should allow him to leave work at any time in order that he might'be able to catch the offending owners. DOG COLLARS The Clerk reported that he had accepted, on behalf of the Board, the tender of Mr Potto for the supply of dog collars at 9d each. —Approved. BOOKS AND ACCOUNTS The Clerk reported that, as instructed, he proceeded to Auckland with the books and accounts of the Board, and the audit was now complete to the second week in June. BUILDING PERMITS Some discussion took place in regard to building permits in the main streets, and objection was made by members to the granting of a permit to Mr I. McLeod. Com. Graham thought this work should not go on. Com. Stewart: Before granting permits the builder should state the price of the building to be erected, and the Board should have a value furnished. Com. Graham : Graating permits for buildings of this description was loose business, and it was a disgrace that buildings of this kind should be erected. • After further discussion the permit was agreed to. AWAROA ROAD Com. Stewart drew, the attention of the Board to the state of Awaroa Road, and stated that the road was becoming worse and worse. He further complained that the Chairman had wasted money on this road, and asked what was going to be done. The Chairman objected to the latter remark, and said it was not true. Com. Thompson: Until the cattle nuisance is got under control the streets would ,be in the same condition. DRAINAGE The Kaipara Dairy Factory Co., Ltd,, were granted permission to carry out certain drainage work at the factory. . Free burial plots The Minister of Internal Affairs wrote asking that the Board grant free burial plots for returned soldiers. On the motion of Com. Graham seconded by the Chairman, it was decided to reply tiiat free plots would be granted to anyone dying belonging to this district. RAILWAY REFUSE Com. Beoroft referred to the nuisance caused by the Railway Department, and stated that they should be oompelled to make a connection with the town sewer." Com, Ptewart: This connection should certainly be made, and asked —How was the Department disposing of'their night-soil ? Com. Field agreed that the Department should come into line with the rest of the town, and proposed that the solicitor be asked his opinion on the subject of enforcing this matter. NELSON STREET Com. Stewart asked: What was proposed to be done in regard to Nelson Street, and the Chairman stated that the work would be gone on with immediately. After some discussion it was resolved that 7 trucks of scoria (5 for Nelson Street and 2 for Awaroa Road) be ordered to do the necessary work.
Mr D. Stewart, he said, was the largest ratepayer and complained about the expenditure of rates, and concluded by mentioning that the Pipitiwai Road was a disgrace. Com. Thompson endorsed the speaker's remarks, and the matter dropped. FINANCE Accounts passed for payment, £70 9/2.
