THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED " THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, MAY 24, 1917 THE BILLETS OF BULLETS.

KILLED BY THEIR OWN PRODUCE.

A STATEMEMT was recently made by the Prime Minister of Australia that a contract had been signed which provided for the sale to Great Britain of the whole of the zinc and spelter output of Australia for the next ten years at remunerative prices. " For the first 12 months of the year," said Mr Hughes, " every German bullet that killed an Australian or a British soldier was made of Australian spelter. Great Britain drew her spelter for munitions from Australia through German channels, and the pockets of the Germans were heavy *with the profits which they exacted at the expense of the Empire. During that period Great Britain paid three times as much for the spelter which she obtained through German agencies as was charged to Germany. Now all that is changed. The spelter mined in Australia by Australians with the aid of Australian capital goes through channels that are exclusively British, and finds its way untainted into the munition factories of the Empire. The German cancer that was sucking the life-blood from our base metal industry has been destroyed, root and fibre. It will never raise its head again.
