FLASHES.
Avondale Races, 11th and 14th April. For special train arrangements see advertisement. " Here's to three of our best friends. May they fall, never to rise again ! — Meat, bread, and coal." On Good Friday evening " The Story lof the Cross " will be sung by the choir at St. Matthew's Church, Helensville. A farewell social will be 'given to the local members of the 25th Reinforcement on Easter Monday evening, at the Star Theatre. A very interesting lecture on his experience in the trenches in France, will be given by Mr H. M. Srneeton, on Wednesday next, 11th inst. Mass will not be held on Easter Sunday at the Roman Catholic Church, Helensville, but will be celebrated the following Sunday at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Now that the sand and tar are about Garfield Road, a little on the Nelson and Gow Street footpaths would be appreciated. Prior to breaking-up for the Easter holidays, the Helensville School children presented their popular teacher, Miss Ganley (who is leaving to be married) with a handsome tea service. . On Saturday evening next, 7th inst., an entertainent will be held in each of the local Halls, the proceeds of which will be devoted to patriotic purposes. A Grand Scottish Concert by Auckland artists will be held in Stewart's Theatre, and a splendid programme of pictures will be shown at the Star Theatre. On Sunday morning next a military memorial service will be held at the Highland Unit Camp in Mr Elliott's paddock. The Rifle Club will parade at the Defence Office at 10 a.m., in uniform. Other local bodies are requested to attend. Mr Jenkins (Church of Christ) will conduct the service. The residents at the lower end of First Avenue complain that the Town Board in their recent footpath-repairing campaign, neglected to continue the footpath past the Masonic Hall. There are five or six houses beyond this, and the unfortunate occupants have to put up with a narrow track through the graes-^-not too pleasant for winter. The new railway time-table will come into force on May 1. It is understood that the new scheme provides for one express daily on the main trunk lines and reduction of suburban trains, leaving only those used by workers, and the total elimination of race trains and other excursion trains. One of the considerations will be a shortage of coal, which is almost as embarassing as the need for releasing men. A sensation has been caused in the Reichstag by both Socialist groups opposing the Supplementary Estimates. The Socialist leader declared that "a just peace must be reached as soon as possible," and said that experience justified distrust of the Government's policy. This is the first time the whole Socialist Party has opposed the Government. No further wash-outs or slips were reported to have occurred on any "of the Auckland section railways as a result of the heavy rain which fell during Saturday night and Sunday. The Railway Department still 'has gangs of men employed in removing the debris brought down by the recent slips and floods on the Kaipara line, there being hundreds of tons of material yet to carry away. It is anticipated that it will be some months before the work is completed. The line itself has been rendered safe for traffic which was resumed some time ago.
