AWARDS FOR ESSAY

THE winners of the prizes offered to school children throughout New Zealand for an essay on " How You Mean to Help the Empire," are :—First prizes (gold medals)— Ron a Whitton, Mt.Eden School; Fred Baume, Waitaki Boys' High School. Second prizes—Brucie Deroles, Hinau; Jean Drummond, Mt. Eden. Third prizes—Jean Campbell, Waitara; James Brady, Boys' Grammar, Auckland ; Ralph Wilson, Bunedin ; W. Sparks, Wakapuaka. There were also 58 fourth prizes awarded, but none of the winner aye local children. The best way boys and girls can " Help the Empire," the judges decided was as follows.: —• 1 Try to grow up strong and healthy. 2 Work to get the best education possible. 3 Help to make our soldiers happy and comfortable as possible at the front and in hospitals. 4 Help all you can in the soldiers homes while they are away defending your homes. 5 Ask father and mother to try and help all they can the returned soldiers in civil life. 6. Honour and help disabled men. 7. Make war widows' and orphans' lives happy.
