THURSDAY Fighting Submarines—New British Measures — Navy Clears Safe Channels—ltalian Airmen Bomb Pola—Encircling of Kul-el-Amara —Empty.n Australian Transport Sunk. ;V The smallness of mercantile losses is held to prove that the new German submarine campaign is failing entirely. One of the British preventive measures is the clearing] of safe channel's. It is believed that many submarines have been sunk. Italian shipping continues as usual, the protective measures being considered adequate. The White Star liner Afric, of 12,000 tons, which has been in used as a transport for Australian troops, was sunk in the English Channel while returning to Australia. There were no troops on board. Seventeen of the crew are missing. China has sent a Note to Germany . • protesting against ruthless submarine warfare. It is rumoured that the Chinese Government will break off diplomatic relations. An Italian air squadron bombed Pola, daniaging the arsenal and ships. The British have made another advance to. the west of Kut-el-Amara. They crossed the Tigris and completely hemmed in an enemy force.
