THE HELENSVILLE BAND.

SECRETARY'S REPORT AND BALANCE SHEET. a recent meeting of the Helensville Town Band, the Secretary (Mr Isaac Hughes) presented the following report:— In presenting this, the first annual report and balance sheet, I wish to recognise the financial support extended to us by the public of Helensville, both bydonations and by patronising our concerts, for which we are all grateful. We are also thankful to those who have put' forth special effort within the .Band, as Mr Carter (our first conductor) for whom we all have a regard, also the President (Mr Elliott), our present conductor (Mr Berryman), and Mr Carmody (as collector), and to the members in general credit is due for the manner in which they have rallied to practices often through mud and rain, and also to help gratuitously in patriotic affairs and other charities, sometimes at very short notice and at great sacrifice. I, personally, and rightly too, am very proud of the Band and its efficiency, .which everyone who heard it on' Show Day was highly satisfied with. We are able to muster sixteen players, besides the conductor, and we have quite a number of learners who will probably be up to the stand.within the next three months. Although there are a number of privately-owned instruments in the Band we are handicapped to some extent'by lack of sufficient instruments, and a.few of same need repairing, but I am glad to say I know of people in the tcwn who are prepared to help us in any effort to buy new. Although the past year has been a strenuous one fo a young Band, I' hope to see more energy still put forth in the coming months, with a view to having a better equipped and more efficient Band still. Should this, war prove a hindrance.to the Band as at present formed, rather than it should go down I would like to see the girls of Helensville follow the lead of some of the London girls and keep it going, and so be-able to meet our heroes when they return with the same music as they possibly have to leave.
