ANOTHER FIRE.
THIS TIME IK FIR?T
AVENUE.
WITHIN the space of one week a second fire has occurred in Helensville. At the early hour of 3 a.m. on Friday last, Bth inst., a three-roomed cottage in First Avenue was completely destroyed by fire. The only occupant at the time was Mrs Roberts. The alarm was first raised by Mr Tilby, who rushed to the fire-bell, which, unfortunately, cracked during the process of ringing. However, members of the Fire Brigade were soon on the spot, and with the assistance of several of the neighbours were no time in checking the flames. None of the furniture was saved, and the occupaat, Mrs Roberts, had a narrow escape from being burned to death. The lady*j& question was awakened by/^? smell of smoke, and, dazed and half suffocated, managed to escape through the window, when she was assisted off the verandah by willing hands.
The origin of the fire is practically unknown, but it is surmised that it started in the kitchen through some embers falling out of the fire-place.
The owner of the house, Mr Steve Watson, had the building insured for £100, and the furniture and effects were insured by the occupier for £120. -
