FLASHES

Band Concert, October 12th. Miss Muriel Allen will sing.

" Life " for October is a wonder. Get in early.

During the coming season we are promised a "few more" motor cars on the road for the Parakai Springs traffic.

Work has been recommenced on the North Auckland Railway, on the Kaikohe-Okaihau section.

Captain S. W. Turley, of Nthe 15th, North Auckland, Regiment, has been promoted to the rank of major.

With the late fine weather, the tourist traffic is commencing to increase to the Springs.

The British have taken nearly 27,000 prisoners on the Sorame during the past three months.

"The Birth, of a Nation," at the Helensville Theatre shortly. Particulars next issue.

A meeting of the members of the Women's Patriotic League will be held to-morrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. Mattees of importance will be discussed.

Helensville Brass Band Concert, 12th October, Star Theatre, Don't miss hearing Miss Muriel Allen. Do your duty and roll up.

The President of the German Reichstag states that the position of Germany is satisfactory in every respect.—No one ever yet said Germany had shifted.

The dry-cleaners and dyers, Messrs Reid and Co., near ECHO Office, are turning out old suits to look like new, clean, spic-and-span.—Try them.

Several residents of the district have recently ventured on the purchase of motor cars. Perhaps with the increase of wheel traffic we may expect better roads in the near future.

We have now in hand the printing of the Helensville A. and P. Association Show Schedules for 1917, and prospective advertisers should take this opportunity of announcing their business by taking up a page or half-page at once.

A Memorial Service will be held inHhe Kaukapakapa Hall at 2.30 p.m. next Sunday, to the late Rifleman Andrew Mcßride, of Kaukapakapa. All military men are requested to attend in uniform. The Rev. J. A. Lamond will preach.

We have to congratulate Comr. J. F. Lambert on being appointed Chairman of the Helensville Town Board. He is alright on the anvil with the hammer, then why not in the chair ?

Lieut, (temp.) J. W. Fletcher, N.Z.E.F., of Helensville, reverts to his substantive rank of Staff Sergt.-Major in the New Zealand Permanent Staff, and is appointed an Area Officer (temp.), with headquarters at Onehunga.

Mr E. Page, S.M. at Whangarei, is mentioned as the probable successor to Mr F. W. Burgess, S.M, for the Thames J circuit, who is expected to accept the Chairmanship of the MilitaryService Board for the Auckland

Province

Quite a sensation has been caused in Helensville at the prices Mr Gahagan is offering Mr J. A. Megson's stock which has been bought by the former at a big discount. This big clearance starts to-day, and it behoves everyone to get their share of the prizes.*

The many friends of Const. Driscoll, will be glad to learn that his foot is getting better, though slowly. Trying to capture that prisoner in a boat months and months ago, has caused a retired life at Rotorua to become somewhat monotonous, but he hopes to reach terra firma without sticks very soon, nevertheless.

A nice but quiet wedding took place at Silverdale last Wednesday, Miss Fanny Jack and Mr C. S. Metcalf of Birkenhead, being the contracting parties. Rev. Lamond officiated at the bride's home, where there was a large number of visitors present. Mr Eric Jack (a returned Anzac) did the amiable, and Miss Louisa Jack acted as bridesmaid. May luck attend all concerned.

An exceptionally good programme will be shown at the Star Theatre on Saturday evening next. "The Fire of Life" (a Nordisk drama) should alone prove an exceptional attraction. In addition to this splendid picture, there are two very fine two-reel dramas, " The Child of the Surf," and "By Whose Hand " (the great mystery play), which, with the supporting films, will give a long and most entertaining programme. The big feature of Wednesday night's programme is the Vitagraph masterpiece " The Evil Men Do," (3000ft)—a strong, vivid, and appealing story of love and life in the upper circles of America— Surely a most fascinating.subject.

There's a business man in this town who is a regular terror to shirkers, and we are with him in his contentions. He was approached the other day for a snbscription towards a certain local body, and.point blank replied—"My sub, is ready when you shunt the shirkers out of your crowd !" Just so; the gentleman in question (no bones about Cullens) fepls it hard that while his progeny at the front is fighting for King and Country, he should be asked to subscribe to keep a lot of alleged slackers in'clover.

In reference to the service held by Bishop Averill at St. Matthew's Church, Helensville, on Sunday morning, 24th September, we inadvertently omitted to mention that two beautiful wreaths were placed one on each side of the tablet erected in memory of the late Lieut. T. G. N. Screaton. The wreaths were prerented by Lieut:-Colonel Steadman and a number of returned soldiers. The tablet was erected by the mother of deceased.
