TOWN BOARD MATTERS
TO THE EDITOR
SIR, —There has been some talk in connection with town improvements by tree-planting, cement channelling, etc. Would it not be better to first' get the streets put on their permanent levels. For instance, the road should be graded from Screaton's store to opposite the Catholic Church gate. And from Joe Parke's 'Hotel towards the railway crossing. And the material would go a long way towards filling in the other hollow. With your permission, Mr Editor, I will endeavour next week to show how this can be metalled at a cheap rate.
The park and gardens where people may sit down and take a rest without going into a pub, might reasonably be attended to. A strip perhaps could be acquired, from the properties between the Post Office and the Doctor's residence, and extending to Bridge Street, opposite the Hotel. None of this is fit for building, sites until the swampy parts and the creek are filled in, but it would be an ideal place for gardens, and taken in connection with Mr Stewart's beautiful grounds opposite it would indeed be a beauty spot and a delight to all beholders, and, moreover, it would make a short-cut to the Railway Station for pedestrians. It would be good business for the town authorities to acquire the whole block from the Post Office round by the street to the Railway Station and lay out in gardens, reserving the frontages for building sites, thus creating a scene of loveliness at the entrance, instead of the dejected, squalid, smelly reception one gets on arrival at the principal entrance to the town. —I am, etc., Progress.
