PARAKAI SUBDIVISION.
NOT A " REMOTE " DISTRICT.
Mr R. Nicholls, of Parakai, waited on the Waiteniata Council at' their last meeting, in reference to a property which he was sub-dividing, and asked that it be classified for roading purposes as a remote district.
Tiae Chairman said it seemed to him that this particular district was going to be too closely settled to come under the " remote district " classification.
Mr Nicholls said he was sub-dividing his property, and did not wish to shirk any responsibility ; at the same time he did not want to be saddled with any unreasonable oonditions. ,
Cr. Taylor stated ttfat the property was likely to be closely settled, and it seemed to him the roads should be metalled.
Cr. McLeod said others would probably also be cutting up property in the district and he was in rather a difficult position as he had to protect ratepayers in other parts of the district. These people were cutting-up land in their own interests, and it seemed hardly fair to ask other ratepayers to help to pay for their metalling,
The Chairman said there was no [question that the place was a coming township, and it seemed hardly right that no metal should be put down.
Mr Nicholls said he did not care mv which way the Council decided, as long as it was established as a precedent, and others were treated in the same way. The Chairman said that if they could not declare it a remote district for Mr Nicholls, they would certainly not do so for anyone else.
It was resolved that the Council cannot declare the district a remote one.
