FLASHES

King's Birthday on Saturday. No celebrations on.

Monthly Euchre Party and Dance next Monday.

Once more the Town Board threaten to sue for arrears of rates. Some people get a lot of latitude.

Yet another plucky lad of Helensville, J. Ross (son of Captain Ross, the jovial skipper of the s.s. Tuirangi), has enlisted tor foreign service, to fight for King and uphold England's glory.

A meeting of the Helensville Women's Patriotic League was addressed on Tuesday last by the Mayoress of Auckland (Mrs Gunson), but no report has been furnished us.

Proceedings are to be taken against those who do not connect up with the Town Board sewerage system, and time, too. Why should the local body make " fish of one and flesh of another ?"

They murder their Presidents and exPresidents for sure in America. Mr Roosevelt narrowly escaped being struck by a knife thrown by an onlooker as he was motoring through Kansas City.

We beg to acknowledge having received since last issue, from Mr J. A. Wilson, £3 3s ; and Mr Daniel Stewart £2 2s, in aid of the North Auckland Aeroplane Fund.

It is fixed-up that a grand concert will be held towards the end of the month, in aid of the Helensville Brass Band. It, is time we had something lively in the musical line, and we think, in the hands of Mr J. Carter, there is an assured treat in prospective. At the same time — the Band ! the Band 1

We are assured by one who knows him that the well-dressed clerical-looking gent as mentioned in last issue, going round selling tea, is not a fraud, but a genuine preacher, who runs a new sect of his own called the Salvation Church, and that he only sells tea ." to keep the pot boiling," or in other words, to enable him to live, as he doesn't take up collections amongst his little circle.

Mangonui township is doing a twist round, the County Council having decided to make Kaitaia the County town where new chambers are to be erected after the war is over. There are now two Banks doing business there; the Masonic Lodge, founded in Mangonui township 24 years ago, has removed to Kaitaia, where houses and settlement are being built and extended.'

To-morrow (Friday) evening at the Star Theatre a very fine selection of pictures ■will •be shown, of which " Ninon de L'Enclos," a strong Eclair drama, ■will be an extremely attractive feature. Saturday's programme at same Theatre will include "Children of the Sea," a pretty drama, concerning lives of an artist and those he met while on a health trip to an island, and as the story is cleverly arranged and well acted, it should prove decidedly fascinating^ Wednesday's programme is headed by a powerful drama, "On the Stroke of Five," in which a society adventuress is the cause of a young man's suicide ; his brother swears revenge, £.nd though later he becomes attacted to her himself, carries out his plan, and the concluding chapters are thrilling to a degree. The supporting pictures are composed of dramatic and humorous items, cartoons, and the latest Pathe Gazette.
