TOWN BOARD AFFAIRS

TO THE EDITOR

SIR,—In the ECHO of April 6th., I notice a letter from the Chairman of the present Town Board, to which I would direct public attention, as no member of the Board has endeavoured to reply. Some of the present Board were also members of the old Board, and were responsible with their leader for the hash-up of finances. I notice also the remark that apparently Mr McLeod did a great part of the work himself, and went to the Board to have his actions confirmed. It appears to me that they were the jellyfish and that the Chairman (like the tide) carried them wheresoever he would, and in that case the only conclusion the ratepayers can come to is that they (the members referred to) are incapable of representing the people. Again, this is not the only hash. Notice the water-supply. Who, with any common sense, would dream of supplying a town with surface-water gathered largely amongst dead herbage, etc., without putting in filtering beds ? These were the first things I looked for when visiting the dam, but failed of course to find them. What is the result when you turn on the water ? You turn on a sickening smell also, and all over > the town there are complaints of the water not being fit to wash with ; when it has seryed for sanitary arrangements and watering the gardens it is about all it is fit for. I know it is no use crying over spilt milk, but it may be some use to have new cans. Now, sir, these old cans will probably be offering for re-election shortly, and I for one think it would pay the ratepayers to think twice before, re-electing them. Much more might be said, but I think this much might make the people of Helensville stop to think, and make a move for the better by introducing persons who will better represent them,— I am, etc.. A Ratepayer. [The writer gives the Editor permission to give anyone desiring it, his name.—Ed.]
