THE KAIPARA AND WAITEMATA ECHO WITH WHICH IS INCORPORATED "THE KAIPARA ADVERTISER & WAITEMATA CHRONICLE." HELENSVILLE, THURSDAY, MARCH 16, 1916 THE TOWN BOARD FINANCES

From a perusal of a statement made the other night by the Chairman of the Helensville Town Board (Mr E. T. Field), it will be noticed that finances have been all astray before and since the present Board, took office, and that the main object during the currency of their term, has been to "set the house in. order." Under these circumstances, it is not to be wondered that little else than cleaning out water-tables and tarring and sanding footpaths, and the "sacking" of a surfaceman, has been the order of the day. Hence the Echo must be '(excused if it said nothing substantial has been done by the present Board towards improving the place. The Echo must also be excused for not knowing the Town Board's monetary difficulties in not spending moneys on improvements and new works. But do the ratepayers know any more than we do ? This is excusable for one and all, considering that no balance-sheet has been published for two years ! ! There is' hope for Com. Elliott yet, when he says— "Yet the Echo says we(th^ Board) have done nothing!" We will give him the loan of our grid-iron (beg pardon, we mean the editor's chair) any time he likes, to contradict any statements made by us re new works or improvements to the town of late, which, in so many words, we never did ! And supposing we did, what then ? The Chairman's financial statement has nothing to show in this respect, nor would one expect it. —Ahem.
