WAITEMATA'S QUARRY

When the Waitemata County Council finally decided to acquire the Waitakere quarry, it was proposed that the Council pay half the cost of constructing a road from the Waitakere railway station through Mr Petrie's property to the quarry. Cr Bethell, who has been largely instrumental in the purchase, found, however, that many of the ratepayers were strongly opposed to this proposal, and at Friday's meeting of the Council he moved that the proposal be rescinded, and that a proposal subsequently submitted by Mr Petrte, to the effect that instead of the Council paying him half cost of the construction of the road, he roceivo any surplus rates over and above the present rates which may accrue on his property during the liext five years, be adopted.

The contract price for the road is £250, the whole of which is te be paid by Mr Petrie. He continue., to pay the present rates on. his property, but any additional rates which may accrue as the result of the enhanced value of his property during the next five years go to him as a recompense for'his outlay. The motion was seconded by Cr. McLeod and carried. —Waitemata News.
