THE BLUE METAL QUARRY

IN THE ZOO OR A BEAR GARDEN

WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

QUITE a lively discussion on the Waitakere quarry site took place on Monday last at a special, meeting of the Waitemata County Council, held in Auckland, in fact, our correspondent states that the proceedings were more of a bear-garden order or a row in the Zoo, than a local governing decorous meeting— when all present were talking at nobody, and anybody didn't care a fig :—

Present:' Messrs A.M.Lang (in the chair), F. Dye, J. McLeod, Oliphant, W. Hart, H. Day, J: JSL Bethell, A. Cochran, anp F. Pointon.

A deputation from Kaukapakapa riding composed of Messrs Mark, Jordan, Shanks and Webster, was introduced by Councillor Dye. The members- of-the deputation protested strongly against the suggestion of the Council that Kaukapakapa should be asked to contribute towards vthe cost of., purchasing the quarry ajad erecting plant to work the stone. The speakers declared that the quarry would be of no use whatever to Kaukapakapa.

In reply to Cr. Day, the deputation stated that j there was' as much blue metal in Kaukapakapa as was evexlikely to be needed. For the present they preferred to use scoria, which could be landed at Kaukapakapa from Auckland at 2/10 a yard.

Cr. F. Dye struck to , his colours by opposing expenditure for his riding of Kaukapakapa.

After a lot of wrangling and useless discussion on ( the subject of the quarry, the following motion was carried, on the motion ot Cr. Oliphant—That for the purpose of a quarry at Waitakere 200 acres of land be purchased, 100. acres from E. Smyth at £25 an acre, and 100 acres from G. Hosking at £6 per acre, the proportions of the purchase money to be borne as follows : Waitakere riding £220 Waipareira £183 6s 6d, Waikumete £183 6s Bd, Mairetahi £183 6s Bd, Kumeu £183 6s Sd, Kaukapakapa £73 6s Sd, Titiran£73 6s Bd. °'
