COUNTY RIDINGS IN CLOVER j
WHEN THEY GET IT
At the last meeting of the Waiteui^u County Conncil, held in that hoir'-aaj| corner crib in Swanson Street, •' wber^
even daily paper reporters fight shy, & *& >7i?.a:tt-b*r"of-Vd,St"inrporfccfeE*©^« "tlii -ridings *" north of Waitakerei, was brought forward by the energetic member for Mairetahi Riding (Mr Jas. McLeod)., It appears that for some time past the question of getting metal for our roads has been a sore trial. The Council at \ J[ last had an offer made them of 200 acres as a quarry site within two miles of Waitakerei railway station. After the option was acquired, the Council set up a committee to consider ways and means ard which ridings would be most benefitted. by purchase of the site. After going fully into the matter, a committee was appointed by the Council, which agreed that the site be held under option at a cost of £1,100. As the quarry is so convenient to the station, no less than A seven ridings of the County, out of the I %<■••,< H, would be able to secure an unlimited I supply by rail of first-class road metal f|fe Needless to say here, the Helensville |j ■ Town Board would also be able to parj. [ ticipate in this boon. It was proposed k ' that the seven ridings interested should fw contribute as follows: — Waitakerei, "i\ £220; Waipareiri, £183 ; Waikomete, £183; Mairetahi, £180; Kumeu, £183 ;. Kaukapakapa, £79.; Titirangi, £79. When the committee brought forward their report, it was decided that only the seven ridings interested in the option should vote, as the other four ridings on the East Coast would derive no benefit * from the purchase of the quarry site. On a division being taken of the seven ridings interested, but five of the members voted in favour of the purchase, while the 'representatives for Kumeu (Mr Kerr-Taylor) and Kaukapakapa (Mr
F. Dye) strongly objected, stating that J^w constituents were-fe unauirrious -,she purchase of the quarry site. l!>e resolution was casied. then, how^v^J!T"--fefie^*ff*irixeiiTat.ti, County solicitor, having been consulted &as given his opinion that the resolution was not legally carried, as the four uninterested members of the East Coast ridings did not participate in -the voting as they should have done. Councillors interested then wanted to push the question further home, hy including all members in the voting, but the two objecting councillors in particu- ■ lar, beforementioned, maintained that a . special meeting. of the Council would have to be called,' while Cr McLeod ;'; maintained, as has been done on previous occasions, the standing orders had bnly ■'...' to be suspended in order to settle the : question. This appeared to pxit .the ■'.'- JQ£ ChairTnan, Mr Lang, who is new to the business, in a bit of a quandary, but it was eventually decided that a special meeting be called for 27th insfc.
