Greece Equivocating — Unsatisfactory Reply—Hopeful attitude of Roumania — Evacuatfon of Monastir
The reply of Greece to the allies' demands' is that she will maintain a benevolent neutrality so long as her sovereign rights are not infringed and no restrictions of a military character are imposed. She contends that, with Salonika in the hand of the allies the Greek forces will be deprived of their only provisioning base. The Greek reply has increased anxiety in the European capitals. It is authoritatively stated that Servia still has available 250,000 men, though they require arms. Portion of the army is retreating in good order to the Albanian and Montenegrin frontiers, and the other in a south-westerly direction. They are taking with them 50,000 Austrian prisoners.
Earl Kitchener has returned to London. He had an enthusiastic reception from the men at Anzac, to whom he delivered the King's message of appreciation. Earl Kitchener went through the first line of trenches, being at times only 20yds from the Turks. It is reported that a German submarine lias been dynamited off Crete.
