There is an impression abroad that the Hon. W. F. Massey rather slighted Helensville on the occasion of our Carnival on Friday last, by not looking in. He was about 15 miles away at Henderson and Swanson, viewing Crown lands, etc ,on the date in question. We shall not forget. No small amount of indignation was expressed at the Mock Court, by the general public,, at the tremendous variations in some of the fines, several in good positions being fined as low as 10s whilst others (working men with families) were mulcted in sums up to a guinea. Mr H. W. Stringer, secretary for local Wounded Soldiers' Fund, sent a draft away to Auckland on Tuesday for £300, making £500 to date. The Queen of the North should be making a jump soon for first position. An example of giving to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund, which should put older people to shame, was exemplified by a young boy of nine, Carroll Garry, who was not satisfied with giving a small donation, but insisted on having his money-box turned ,out, and the whole contents (14s 8d) handed over to the Fund. The celebrated port wine of the "Rozana" Vineyards Henderson, is now advertised at 20s per case of 12 bottles (2 gallons), by the proprietor, Joseph Franich, who manufactures the wine from his own grapes. The Hon. Premier, Mr Massey, Sir Joseph Ward and many others in high positions, have given flattering testimonials as to the excellence of the wines in question.
The Carnival Committee express their thanks to all those who assisted so generously to make the Carnival on Friday last such a success, especially
the following : Mr G. Bennett senr. and
fishermen, Mrs E. McEwin, Mr Jaa | McLeod, Mr A. Becroft, Mr J. Simcock, I the gate-keepers, and ladies who superj vised the afternoon tea.
