Sanguinary Battle—Allied Offensive in Servia — More German Naval Losses-Cruiser and SubmarinesTorpedoed Italian Liner—Nearly All Passengers Saved
The allies have taken the offensive on the whole front . from the River Vardar to Strumnitza, in Bulgaria, and engaged in a sanguinary battle with the Bulgarians. The Servians claim a success in the Vardar Valley against the Bulgarians advanc- - from Uskub. IWbpru'lu, on the Salonika-Nish rc^Tway, is still held by the Bulgarians, although French patrols are outside the town. The French have seized an important^ summit on their left wing. --The French and British lines have been linked together. The allies are steadily sending reinforcements to Servia. It is. rumoured in Paris that when the Bulgarians and Germans effect a junction they will march on Salonika. A Oopenhagennewspaperstates that the German third-class cruiser Frauenlob, a sister ship to the Undine, recently sunk, has been torpedoed in the Baltic. "The Italian liner Ancona was sunk by a submarine flying the Austrian flag, but believed to be German, 'off Sardinia. There were 422 passengers on board, half of them women and children! It is probable that all or nearly all have been saved. The House of Commons is to be asked to vote a new credit of £400,000,000 for war purposes. Britain's daily expenditure is now almost £5,000,000, and her war credits aggregate £1,662,000,000.
Speaking in the House of Commons, "Mr Asquith foreshadowed the establishment of an Anglo-French War Council to control conjoint military and naval operations.
