" Old dog for a hard road," Hon. Russell came down and smoothed us all over Saturday last, leaving same evening for town.

The meeting called for Saturday evening last, for patriotic purposes, did not eventuate owing to other attractions ,and the day's "Cabinet meeting" without Party politics.

r Show Schedule and Catalogue for Helensville A. and P. Association's next great effort, now be--ing printed at ECHO Office. Be in time with your advertise-

ments

By special request the questions : " Why people do not go to Church?" and "Why they do not send their children to Sunday School ?". will be dealt with at the Presbyterian services on Sunday next. Everybody welcome.

Owing to bad weather conditions on Labour Day (Monday last), great disappointment was evinced by holiday-seekers,' and especially .by the ladies and gentlemen who are so interested in tennis and bowling and whose Club's opening functions had to be postponed until next Saturday.

Duke of Albany Lodge, No. 2073, E.C., Helensville, held its annual installation ceremony on Tuesday ''evening, the usual banquet taking place in Becroft's social hall afterwards. Full report next issue, as our columns are, this week, over-crowded.

We all agree with Hon. Mr Russell, that there should be women's baths established at the Helensville Hot Springs, but where is the money? Government has been most parsimonious with their doles. Some years ago Government scouted the very idea of recognising the mineral spring here. Afraid of the Government township of Rotorua, eh.?

At a large and enthusiastic meeting of the Helensville A. and P. Association, held last night, it was unanimously agreed to accept the tender of John Osborne for the erection of the new Agricultural Hall, 80ft by 40ft, for the sum of £634. The other tenderers were ; J. Simcock £699; F. Wright (Auckland), £749.

" The country is placed in a difficult position on account of the war," said the Hon. W. G. Russell, Minister for Internal Affairs, when referring to the finances of the Dominion at Helensville on Saturday. "We are committed to the expenditure oftwelve millions of money to be spent by June 1 next. The country has been taxed to the extent of two millions per year. The people are standing the new taxation with magnificent patriotism," he added.'

Some disappointment was expressed by a number of visitors from Helensville North to Saturday's functions at Parakai, because, having been driven out by settlers who gave free rides, they naturally expected to be driven homewards after the " show was over" ; not so, however, as many ladies and mere man had to tramp the three miles in, as the settlers of the morning were non est in the evening. This was the first hitch of the day, and, of course, nobody's fault.

Hon. Mr Russell, in promising to develop Helensville Hot Springs as far as the funds of the country would permit, suggested that the Minister for Railways be approached and asked to run cheap week-end trains to and from Helensville. And while our Member, Mr Coates, said we would be quite satisfied with a Sunday train, you could easily discern the twinkle in Hon. Mr Russell's weather-eye as he replied—" Of course we have to consider the religious sentiments of the people !"- Next please.
